Beautifully written, utterly compelling, and ultimately hopeful, this young adult novel by the author of Kissing Max Holden, asks―how brave can you be when your relationship is questioned by everyone you love?

The last thing Elise wants is to start over in a new town. But after her brother’s death in Afghanistan, she and her mother move to a sleepy coastal village to be closer to Elise’s sister-in-law and niece.

When Elise meets Mati during a beachside walk, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Mati is new to town, too. Over the course of the summer, their relationship begins to blossom, and what starts out as a friendship becomes so much more.

But as Elise and Mati grow closer, her family becomes more and more uncomfortable with their relationship, and their concerns all center on one fact―Mati is Afghan.

Praise for The Impossibility of Us

"The Impossibility of Us runs the gamut, from laughs to swoons, from goosebumps to tears. It’s a soaring, beautiful romance, for sure, but there are also so many powerful messages about loss, desertion, racism, tolerance, love, equality, selflessness, friendship, family, and kindness. Touching, well written, and impressively honest, The Impossibility of Us is not to be missed." ―Marci Lyn Curtis, author of The One Thing and The Leading Edge of Now

The Impossibility of Us Katy Upperman Books Reviews

  • Have you ever just hugged a book for a few minutes after you finished because you didn't know how to process how lovely it was? Yeah, that was me after finishing The Impossibility of Us. Katy Upperman has seriously outdone herself with this story. Not only is the prose gorgeous, but each character is drawn so complexly and tackles each side of hard topics like xenophobia, religion, and sexuality with careful consideration. Mati and Elise are two characters that I won't soon forget for their love, their unwavering honesty, and their bravery to stand up for what they believe in despite their family's expectations. Please. Read. This. Book.
  • The Impossibility Of Us is beautifully written book that explores love, loss, and prejudice. Katy Upperman did a wonderful job of being sensitive to a tough subject matter and it shows in her writing. I loved both Elise's and Mati's chapters, but I have a soft spot for Mati's and they had me swooning. Sensitive boys with poetry in their hearts get me EVERY TIME. It is the perfect beach read, but be warned, if you decide to pick this one up (which I highly recommend), you're probably not going to get in the water because you'll be too busy reading.

  • I loved KISSING MAX HOLDEN by Katy Upperman, so I thought I'd love this novel too, and I was right! What a sweet story. It was such an easy read with timely subject matter. The story of Elise and Mati is not to be missed! Loved it.
  • Started a little slow for me but super sweet, thought provoking story in the end. Loved it.
  • A beautifully written and thought-provoking love story. I kept pausing throughout the book to think about my life experiences and try to imagine being in the characters shoes. Upperman was masterful at slowing exposing layers for each complex character. I finished the book in 2 days and enjoyed every minute! Please read!
  • I adore this swoony story!
  • Katy has done it again! I absolutely could not put it down once I got it and ended up finishing the whole book in one sitting. Katy does an incredible job with this one!
