Smotherhood Wickedly Funny Confessions from the Early Years Amanda Lamb 9781599212081 Books Reviews
- We selected this book for book club because the author is a news anchor in our area. My reaction to the book was that it was laugh out loud funny. The chapter on vasectomy was really a hoot. If you are a mom in the Raleigh/Cary area, you will be tickled to see all the local references in the book. The author makes some neat observations about how busy kids are and how that impacts family life. (ex mommy wants to quit ballet) . Many times I thought to myself - "That is exactly how I feel". Birthday parties and goodie bags are out of control. I did feel that the book jumped around from topic to topic and didn't really tie in that great, but the author has such a way with words and quick quit that I didn't mind. I feel that this book is only for mom's with young children. I don't think it is a classic book for everyone that is timeless. I wouldn't recommend to my mother or someone without children.
- In the tradition of David Sedaris, Raleigh, NC claims another great humorist. Maybe it's something in the water, and anyone who takes motherhood too seriously should take a swig. Lamb is honest, insightful and often poignant but above all, hilarious. The breakneck schedule of a TV news reporter and the nerve-frazzling pace of a new mother collide in this dynamo and the results will make any new mother, any veteran mother, anyone who has ever had a mother, laugh themselves to tears.
- Bravo! Thank you for telling it like it really is Amanda Lamb- the sleep deprivation, the poop, the husbands sleeping through the baby's crying, the stupid goody bags at kid bday parties and the "bad" parenting moments. This book made me feel normal!!!
The vasectomy chapter had me laughing until tears came out of my eyes. I will say, if nothing else, I learned what a scrotum holder is and the value of having one I suppose (at least versus a jock strap).
I hope as her kids grow into teenagers she'll write a sequel! - This book was recommended to me by a friend who thought it was hiliarious. Anyone who has children has been through the situations Amanda Lamb writes about. You are not amused when your children are putting you through the wringer; however, when you read about them you really find the situations funny, I think because you realize you are not the only one being tortured by your children. I recommend this book to all mothers! It is hiliarious!
- I thought this book was a pretty quick, light-hearted read. The author is honest & funny as she writes about her daily adventures in being a working mother. I appreciated the fact that the author, while being a working mom, treaded lightly in her discussion of non-working mothers so as not to make one job seem harder than another. While there were parts that made me laugh for sure (the vasectomy chapter, as others have sited, was certainly a hoot!), there were times when I grew tired of the author's thrown in comments which made her seem a tad elitist. Perhaps it it because I am not from the South, but the references to the lack of possibility that rats could not be found in her upscale suburban white neighborhood, her clothes being compared to the size of dinner napkins, her Dad being old money, etc. (all references from the book when discussing garbage in the garage, trick or treating, vacationing with her family on the Jersey Shore, & more), came across snotty and at times unnecessary as if the author threw them in as a small chance to gloat. To me, those types of comments came off as bratty and spoiled, and changed my great like for the author that had developed in earlier chapters. While there were certainly laugh out loud funny parts, I wouldn't recommend this to my girlfriends.
- A friend gave me this book as an early Christmas present after hearing me moan and complain too many times about trying to balance a career with my new title as "mommy." She made me promise to call her when I got to the chapter about the husband's vasectomy. When I finally had enough peace and quiet time to reach that particular chapter, it was 1am on Christmas Eve and I laughed until tears were rolling down my cheeks. Given the time, I couldn't call my friend right then, but I could not wait to talk to her the next day.
This book is truly hilarious. I love Laurie Notaro and David Sedaris and this book is right up there with both of those humor-writing greats.
Amanda Lamb has a wicked sense of humor and you'll appreciate the hilariousness of the reality of being a working mom. Call me when you get to the chapter on the vasectomy! - What I particularly like about this book is its focus on the perspective of the working mom, as opposed to the many child-centered books on parenting. Lamb lives the daily juggling battle, wanting desperately to succeed in each realm, recognizing that humor is often the best medicine. "The thing about being a crazy, distracted working mother is that all distractions are not equal. Somehow I can remember that Mallory needs pinecones, a brown sock, and gumdrops for a class project on Thursday. Chloe needs a white sweatshirt, eleven valentines and a digital picture of herself...But it's the really common things I forget...I forget to bring tampons or an umbrella. I forget where I'm going and drive right past the day care." With wit and wisdom, Lamb captures the chaos that so often results in our efforts to have it all.
- ...but this one elicited dozens of LOLs. Very well-written and painfully honest. I even shared some excerpts with my husband, and we both appreciated the realism and humor. I received it as a gift, and will give it as a gift at the next opportunity.
Definitely pick it up if you need a pick me up!
