  • I like that all the drawing/text boxes are different sizes. The only thing I'd change is that there are talking bubbles placed throughout. I was hoping to allow my son to make his own where he wants. If it had been specified in the description, I would have purchased a different one.
  • My 10-year-old son has recently found interest in drawing comics. He came home one day from school with several pages of notebook paper all doodled with comic style layout. I immediately went to in search of a doodle pad for comic artists, and found this! I am so impressed with the paper quality and the layout design. My son ABSOLUTELY LOVES his new comic book. He has spent hours making stories with his friend and I am one happy Mom to have landed such an awesome find. I will be purchasing another book so that he can have plenty of paper. Each page has a front and a back, but as with most kids, they go through the pages quickly.
  • Perfect for a creative child! My child has a very strong obsessive compulseness problem along with his adhd. Keeping his attention for long periods of time is difficult. This book allows him to create and keep assertiveness. He enjoys this book for hours at a time. The paper inside is very durable (not flimsy easy tearing paper). Great product.
  • My grandkids were too young to even get what this basically blank book with comic line drawings was supposed to be for. They are good story writers and I think we will just put this one away for a while. I like the premise of any book that leaves the filling in to the imaginations and this one is pure in that way. Get them off the devices and send them into creativity land.
  • My 9-year-old loves graphic novels and has been practicing drawing a lot, so I got this for her as kind of an encouragement/reward. She's been slowly adding to it. The format is flexible enough to inspire without dictating what must go on the pages.
  • Pretty cool book for someone getting into comics. The pages do make it difficult to create your own story because it places thought bubbles for you.
  • I love this book and think it is great, however if you have a picky kido beware. My son wants the creative freedom to put the "speech bubbles" where he wants. Other than that, great book
  • these books are so much fun and a great price. My 11 year old daughter loves it and her creations are fantasic. If you are considering this...go for it. Tons of fun and lots of ways to be creative.

Perché, in fondo, "Hartford. New York" è proprio questo un romanzo sul tremendo potere delle ossessioni.

Fire from Heaven Alexander the Great series Book 1 edition by Mary Renault Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

    • Mary Renault writes a great historical novel, with lots of excellent research, but then she brings it to life with memorable, believable characters. After reading about the first years, how the toddler, young Alexander was raised by his half-witch mother, Queen Olympias, and then taken away by his father, King Phillip of Macedon, you feel you understand some about him. Reading about the tutors and young men around Alexander, friends and his eventual lover, Hephaestion, you start to see Alexander become his own person. Unlike other reviewers, I prefer this book to the others of the trilogy... perhaps simply because Alexander has all his life and exciting future before him.
    • Mary Renault was an English writer best known for her historical novels set in Ancient Greece. In addition to vivid fictional portrayals of Theseus, Socrates, Plato and Alexander the Great, she wrote a non-fiction biography of Alexander. If you have not yet read her work, do yourself a favor and purchase one of her novels... I particularly recommend either The Persian Boy or The Last of the Wine. This is also quite good. You will feel like you just spend a summer in ancient Greece.
    • This would be one of the worst books I've ever read if I'd been able to force myself to finish it.

I bought this because I loved the Persian Boy which was a decent historical novel with good prose, and I was hoping for another good book from the author. This book turned me off of buying anything by her ever again - the Persian Boy must have been a fluke. I've never before or since read anything with such a garbled, unfocused narrative. Alexander is the over-glorified focus of the story - but I cannot tell you who the main character was because every chapter or every few pages the story seemed to completely drop what had come before and start over with a different character and setting like an apparating groundhog day. I'd say most of the stories could have been interesting, but not as they were presented here and only if the author stuck with anything.
    • This is the first volume of Mary Renault's trilogy on Alexander the Great, the other two being "The Persian Boy" and "Funeral Games". While they are novels, they are quite reliable in their history. The immediacy of the narrative conveys a better understanding of life in those times than most history books. This volume covers Alexander's childhood to young adulthood, including the dramatic events surrounding his ascension to the throne at age 20 after his father's assassination. Though Renault was not an academic, her research for this trilogy was sufficient to became the basis for two non-fiction books on Alexander.

Renault is a master at making her characters come alive without violating the confines of their known history. She is an excellent writer, and the Alexander trilogy (at least the first two books) and her "The Last of the Wine" are her best writing in my opinion. After I read this book, I read quite a bit of other literature on Alexander, and then later read this book again. I believe that the more a reader knows about Alexander, the more he/she will appreciate this book. The ancient sources on Alexander are seamlessly woven into the developing narrative. In addition, there are fictionalized adolescent relationships that very well prefigure documented central relationships of his later life, including his lifelong friend Hephestion.

Renault clearly likes Alexander, but does not fall victim to the hagiographic style of many Alexander historians before 1950, like Tarn. She is a good counterweight to a modern school of Alexander historians, like Borza, Green, Worthington, etc., who seem intent on deconstructing his greatness and military genius.

The book succeeds as history, but even more importantly for this book, it succeeds as a novel. The characters are authentic and the narrative arc is spellbinding. Renault's writing introduced me to historical fiction years ago, and made me a lifelong fan of it.
    • I was captivated from the first few words. Renault's rich and descriptive writing draws you into the world of Ancient Greece and Macedonia, and it is fascinating. I had never been interested in historical fiction before, but this book gave me an appreciation for it. I know that the author is respected as an historian, and I found that the history depicted (e.g. public, recorded events) matched up with the straight history that I had read and was reading concurrently with this book. So I never felt like I was taking in wrong information. It isn't hard to distinguish between historical fact and the filling in of details in this book. The author also includes a section at the end of the book explaining some of her assumptions and choices.

I read this after returning from a trip to Greece, which of course made the landscapes and distances easier to imagine. It was thrilling to read about Alexander and Hephaestion climbing up to Acrocorinth from Corinth after having recently made the same climb!

Prince of Persuasion Sins and Scoundrels Book 2 edition by Scarlett Scott Dragonblade Publishing Romance eBooks Reviews

    • This book was uncannily similar to a book written a dozen years ago by Gail Ranstrom called “Unlacing Lilly.” They both featured heroes who were the bastard sons of noblemen seeking revenge on their fathers for the untimely deaths of their mothers through the ruination of the fiancés of their half brothers. As convoluted as that storyline is, it is a remarkable coincidence in my eyes. I actually liked that book much better as well. There was a little too much internal dialogue in this book as well as sloppy editing. It was still entertaining, thus the three stars.
    • Is it because it was a revenge book that I needed more time to read it?
Revenge is with triangle love one of my least favorite trope, both deal with secrets that only bring pain and heartache.
I do liked the first part when Frederica and Duncan get to know each other, their interactions, how they play their game of cat and mouse but always respecting the other.
But even they keep secrets from another, each one planning to use the other for its own benefit.
Once the betrayal was revealed, the story takes an other turn, they begin to realize they care more than the usual for another but also the masks of the people around them fall, and it is not very pretty to see what lay behind.
I liked both main characters, sure Frederica is very naive as was alas the sheltered women in these times, but she has a goal, once outside her rank and perfectly unsuitable for a lady but she does not deter and tries to reach it.
Duncan raised himself from the gutters, building his own wealth and name but inside himself, a little boy won’t find peace until he get revenge for his mother’s treatment and death. Alas his ire against a special peer and his encounter with Lady Frederica Isling do not mix well.
At a time, he will have to make a choice, but will she be willing to give him a chance too?
I was glad it was not a too angsty read, the main problems were misconceptions and miscommunication. From the beginning, they are well for one another, each understanding the other. They will just need to see their feelings for the other endangered to get the right decisions.
      A 4,5 stars rate.
    • London, 1812 "He noticed the fellow's arse first." Duncan Kirkwood could only stare as the "gentleman" in his exclusive gaming club bent over. But of course he eventually figured out it was a girl dressed as a man and it happened to be Lady Frederica Isling, daughter of a duke. What was she doing in The Duke's Bastard? She was doing research for her book, that's what! Of course he could see below her garb she was a lady and it eventually came out who she was, that is after she was exposed to some rather risque' entertainment!
A volatile attraction seemed to ignite between the two, but Freddy is an innocent. She had no idea she may be the key to Duncan's revenge plot against his real father. The man who ignores him and caused his mother's death. He didn't name his club the Duke's Bastard for nothing!
What starts out as a chance encounter (ok Freddy had been determined to get into the club) began to change into something else. Scarlett Scott always pulls me into the story and this one tugged at the emotions. Duncan was a very strong, determined man and had pulled himself up from nothing. Freddy only wanted to write stories and not marry the man her parents insisted on.
Sizzling heat, a few twists and even humor at times make this an amazing story not to be missed!! Cannot wait for the next in this series!!
    • Finding a very odd man in his gambling establishment, Duncan Kirkwood soon realized that he was mistaken-it was definitely a female. Quickly making “her” acquaintance, he realized that he had been given a gift. Frederica needed to finish her novel and visiting the Bastard, a well known venue that catered to men, was the perfect place for research. Duncan was very determined to shock this female, but was soon aware that shock would not be her reaction. Intrigued, he and the lady soon negotiate return visits to supplement her novel and he becomes more aware of his feelings for her. Frederica doesn’t realize his alternative motive until it is too late.
I didn’t like the hero for most of the book. His anger had become his sole purpose of life, but the author’s storyline is a well written redemption for him. This second book in the series will keep you interested until the very last page.
    • Gaming hell? Yes. Gorgeous owner of said gaming hell? Yes. Woman who wants to stand on her own and be what she wants to be? Yes. Enough said. I knew this story would be great based on Duncan’s appearance in the last book and it was fantastic. The story is so lovely and edge of your seat – will their differences in social standing work, will the villain see justice, why can’t I stop reading the story? Another wonderful story from Ms. Scott.
    • In this book you will meet Duncan Kirkwood and Lady Frederica Isling. All Frederica wanted to do was to be left along and write her novel “ The Silent Baron”. To further her research she feels that she should visit the gaming house The Duke’s Bastard, which is the most fashionable and notorious gambling hell in London. This gaming house is owned by Duncan Kirkwood.
Duncan’s father is the Duke of Amberley and his mother was his mistress until she became pregnant with Duncan.
Love, revenge, evilness and uncaring parents are entwined in this story.
    • The book had a very good storyline with great characters and plot. I especially appreciated the cleverness in the naming of the club, with the obvious reference and the inferred ones. I really enjoyed reading this book.
    • I absolutely enjoyed reading this book very much. I can't wait to read the next book in the Sins and Scoundrels series.

Practical Statistics for Data Scientists 50 Essential Concepts Peter Bruce Andrew Bruce 9781491952962 Books Reviews

    • A reasonable survey of core statistical methods, not super-clear, plus a slapdash review of a few machine-learning models, with very little explanation.

      Pros
      * Decent review of core concepts
      * Good coverage of importance of distinguishing between sample and population statistics
      * Better discussion of bootstrapping than I've seen anywhere else
      * Good ideas on dealing with non-normal data and avoiding the assumption that all data is normally distributed

      Cons
      * Assumes that you know R. Lots of code, no explanations of the code.
      * Inconsistent level of detail and depth. Detailed coverage of mean, range, quartile, but rampant hand-waving when you get to bagging and boosting
      * Many of the math explanations are unclear or incomplete. The authors make you do a lot of work to figure things out and you will need external resources
      * The last part of the book is a thin and purely practical survey of ML models. You don't get much understanding of how or why things work.
    • Excellent introductory text for a comprehensive overview of statistics! The github repository augments the content very well and provides added value for the statistical topics covered in the book. Both of the Bruce brothers are statistical gurus and this fact is evident in the writing, which is both informative and witty. Peter is the president of Statistics.com and is well-versed in providing statistical instruction to students of all ages and levels. He is also a proponent of resampling and one of the developers of the excellent Resampling Stats software package for Excel.

It is true that the textbook does not provide in-depth coverage for all topics, but I don't think that was the intent of the authors. However, the text DOES provide an excellent introduction to topics relevant to students and data scientists. After reading the text and working through the examples, you will be equipped to further your knowledge in whichever topic you require for you data analysis task.

      Highly recommended!
    • I love this book as a reference. Clear, efficient but detailed explanations. It is not designed as a textbook but as a reference. When I wonder "what is that test used for again?" or "what was that formula?" this is the first thing I reach for. Sure, Google has become universal for that too, but I like having a single hard copy reference that I can get to know and that becomes a trustworthy old friend. This book is taking on that role for me.
    • First of all, this book is not for you if you want a deep and thorough explanation of statistical concepts. It serves a completely different purpose to familiarize a reader with high-level concepts; to enable them to continue their statistics education elsewhere.

I found this book a very engaging read it sets itself apart from other books on statistics in clearly telling which concepts are not-so-relevant for the modern computerized explorative analysis toolset. Many concepts that are presented in classic books on the subjects are rooted in 20s and 30s where computing power wasn't available and researches resorted to various pre-calculated distributions and formulas to do their work. A modern data-scientist's approach would eschew some of the old ways and instead rely on randomization, resampling and computing power.

This book not only tells what something is, but also why it is that way and if a concept is still relevant today.
I can recommend this book if your statistics knowledge is spotty or ephemeral, it serves its purpose well and doesn't bog down the reader with (sometimes) unnecessary mathematical concepts to demonstrate an idea.

      Why the four stars
      1. Lack of examples in programming languages.
      2. Complete lack of exercises (at least 1-2 exercises are necessary).
      3. All scarce examples that are available are in R. No Python. (
    • This book is well written and packs a substantial amount of information into a small number of pages. It is best used to get a survey and overview of many of the facets of the domain of data science. This book will not teach you anything in enough depth to actually execute it well — it will teach you just enough to be dangerous and not realize when you've gone off the rails. I recommend it for managers who may never go into technical depth, for people considering whether or not they are interested in data science, or as a preview book to create a framework from which to hang more detailed understanding. Although this is an introductory book, it assumes you can already program in R. If you can't, either accept that you won't be able to follow the specifics of the examples, or read The Art of R Programming and/or R for Data Science.

I dislike that the authors make a number of categorical statements of the form "Data Scientists do this" or "Data Scientists don't need that". I disagree with many of these assertions and I think they have taken a definition of "data science" which is narrower than the prevailing consensus in the industry.

This book has some errors (see, for example, the confusion matrix on page 196) but overall the accuracy is above average relative to recent norms.

As other reviewers have noted, the author's github repository for the book is currently empty. If that's important to you, check it under "andrewgbruce" on github and make sure it's been updated before you buy the book.

For too long, scientists have focused on the dark side of our biological heritage our capacity for aggression, cruelty, prejudice, and self-interest. But natural selection has given us a suite of beneficial social features, including our capacity for love, friendship, cooperation, and learning. Beneath all our inventions -- our tools, farms, machines, cities, nations -- we carry with us innate proclivities to make a good society.

"Listened to the audiobook, but just bought the paper version. This is one of 2019's bumper crop of books by late career pioneers in the evolution, ethology, and psychology of distinctly human forms of social interaction (Michael Tomasello, Becoming Human; Richard Wrangham, The Goodness Paradox; Frans de Waal, Mama's Last Hug; and EO Wilson, Genesis). Each is touching one part of the elephant, sometimes overlapping parts,. Each has a deep research base well situated in an interdisciplinary knowledge space, which is what you need to begin to grasp something as complex as human social behavior. What this book brings to the party is an extremely sophisticated analysis of how individual genetics can influence large scale social organization, and an exploration of the different evolutionary paths for different types of social interaction. Also, ingenious data sets, for example shipwreck survivors and their fates on isolated/foreign shores. Your time and attention in reading this book will not go unrewarded."

    • With lucid prose and wide-ranging knowledge on the human sciences, this book is a must-read for anyone who is curious about the origins of social groups and societies, as well as the common bonds that Christakis called "the social suite." This book is not only brilliant in its conception, but also sweeping in its scope. But most importantly, Christakis highlights our shared humanity that lies deep within the evolutionary process over centuries, despite our cultural and social differences. This unifying message is both timely and urgent, especially in this historical moment of great divisions and disparities in the United States and beyond.
    • There are thousands of academic writings that address the question, "Are humans fundamentally good?" Scholars will likely never reach consensus on an answer, just as the general population will likely never reach consensus on an answer. But Nicholas Christakis makes a scientifically-supported, passionate argument that we are wired to be decent, to work together, to not hate each other. And, to the extent that that belief can become a self fulfilling prophecy, I'm inclined to join him in it. This is a smart, timely book written by a scholar who has demonstrated that HE is a truly decent human. It is, in my opinion, his masterpiece.
    • This book made me think about and reconsider the question is human nature fundamentally selfish or altruistic, questions about nature vs. nurture, and the idea of emergent properties. I appreciated how the new ideas presented were backed up with plenty of supporting evidence from prior observational and research studies. I thought the author did a great job narrating.
    • The book is filled with examples, graphs, images, and explanations that help the reader understand more deeply. On top of this, the style is engaging making it easier to read and even fun.
    • another great book by Christakis. If you read and loved Connected as I did, you'll find this book just as insightful and entertaining. Loved the section on shipwrecks. I've met the author in person and he's one of the smartest people I've ever spoken to.
    • Great subject .... Well written.
      Academic in structure..
    • A rewarding and edifying read for those who are interested in genetics and the evolution of homo sapiens. The author picks up where Darwin left off and expands our understanding of the biological origins of social behavior and culture.

The irresistible story of Japanese cherry blossoms, threatened by political ideology and saved by an unknown Englishman

Collingwood Ingram, known as ‘Cherry’ for his defining obsession, was born in 1880 and lived until he was a hundred, witnessing a fraught century of conflict and change.

After visiting Japan in 1902 and 1907 and discovering two magnificent cherry trees in the garden of his family home in Kent in 1919, Ingram fell in love with cherry blossoms, or sakura, and dedicated much of his life to their cultivation and preservation.

On a 1926 trip to Japan to search for new specimens, Ingram was shocked to see the loss of local cherry diversity, driven by modernisation, neglect and a dangerous and creeping ideology. A cloned cherry, the Somei-yoshino, was taking over the landscape and becoming the symbol of Japan's expansionist ambitions.

The most striking absence from the Japanese cherry scene, for Ingram, was that of Taihaku, a brilliant ‘great white’ cherry tree. A proud example of this tree grew in his English garden and he swore to return it to its native home. Multiple attempts to send Taihaku scions back to Japan ended in failure, but Ingram persisted.

Over decades, Ingram became one of the world’s leading cherry experts and shared the joy of sakura both nationally and internationally. Every spring we enjoy his legacy. ‘Cherry’ Ingram is a portrait of this little-known Englishman, a story of Britain and Japan in the twentieth century and an exploration of the delicate blossoms whose beauty is admired around the world.
