"... anni passati a lavare i vostri panni
sporchi di paure e bugie
non mie." (Solitudine)

“Quanti semi di sale e inverno
ora lasciano il posto al riso,
nella città che non doveva esistere più?” (Hiroshima)

“ma l’attesa
non è una barriera
è una ascesa
verso i tuoi rami alti
la sfida della linfa
alla forza di gravità
sotto la tua corteccia
così apparentemente immobile
così viva.” (Quiete)

“Quando il vuoto ha riempito
lo spazio infinito
tra sentimento e illusione
resta solo l’equazione” (Dirac)

“Sei il profumo di quest’inverno
dalle rocce scivolose
dalle favole con il carburante in riserva,
sei la pagina che mi è esplosa
tra le dita
coprendomi di scintille di vita.” (Nero)

“il ritmo che da delicato
sale le ottave
del peccato originale
finché accelerando
superiamo il muro del sogno
e... bang!” (Liquidi)

“Più vasto il buio
più forte la tua luce.” (Plutone)

"E nel caos dissonante
degli ego smisurati
il silenzio è un’arma di ricostruzione di massa." (Silenzio)

"Nel settimo giorno
abbiamo modellato Dio
a nostra immagine e incommensurabile distanza." (Tempo)

"l’amore è un attimo,
il dovere un lungo ponte." (Al di là delle parole)

“... a seminare le nostre decisioni
finché crescano alberi rossi
di sangue e di vergogna" (Jadovno)

“... i miei quaderni di follia
rigati di velluto lacrimale arido
e di folate di avverbi preziosi" (Sally 0911)

alle cui onde dò del tu” (Solitudine)

The Happiness Hypothesis Audible Audio Edition Jonathan Haidt Ryan Vincent Anderson Hachette Audio Books Reviews

  •  â€œWhere does happiness come from? There are several different “happiness hypotheses.” One is that happiness comes from getting what you want, but we all know (and research confirms) that such happiness is short-lived. A more promising hypothesis is that happiness comes from within and cannot be obtained by making the world conform to your desires. This idea was widespread in the ancient world Buddha in India and the Stoic philosophers in ancient Greece and Rome all counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and events, which are always unpredictable and uncontrollable, and to cultivate instead an attitude of acceptance. This ancient idea deserves respect, and it is certainly true that changing your mind is usually a more effective response to frustration than is changing the world. However, I will present evidence that this second version of the happiness hypothesis is wrong. Recent research shows that there are some things worth striving for; there are some external conditions of life that can make you lastingly happier. One of these conditions is relatedness—the bonds we form, and need to form, with others. I’ll present research showing where love comes from, why passionate love always cools, and what kind of love is “true” love. I’ll suggest that the happiness hypothesis offered by Buddha and the Stoics should be amended Happiness comes from within, and happiness comes from without. We need the guidance of both ancient wisdom and modern science to get the balance right.”

~ Jonathan Haidt from The Happiness Hypothesis

That’s officially the longest intro quote of any of the Notes I’ve created so far but OMG. Makes you wanna read the whole book, eh?! )

Jonathan Haidt is a leading positive psychology researcher/professor at the University of Virginia and this book is an incredible look at ten “Great Ideas” from ancient wisdom that he brilliantly analyzes in the light of modern science while helping us apply the super practical stuff to our 21st century lives. It’s a great blend of intellectual rigor, philosophical wisdom and nuts and-bolts practicality that I highly recommend.

If this Note resonates with you, I *definitely* think you’ll love the book. I put it up there with Sonja Lyubomirsky’s How of Happiness and Tal Ben-Shahar’s Pursuit of Perfect and Happier as some must-read positive psychology goodness.

Here are some of the Big Ideas

    1. The Rider & The Elephant - Learn to ride your elephant!
    2. Epiphanies - And lasting change.
    3. Meditation - The magic pill.
    4. Cognitive Therapy - It works.
    5. Pulling the Splinter - The joy of taking responsibility.

Let’s get clear on our ultimate purpose and move toward it, lest we step in other people’s elephant poop, yo! )

  • Jonathan Haidt is a thinker who seeks harmony where possible, and his book The Happiness Hypothesis strives to achieve a fruitful balance between ancient wisdom and modern science, between East and West, and between liberalism and conservatism.

The overriding metaphor of the book involves portraying the mind as as an elephant and its rider, which Haidt uses to explore the insights of evolutionary psychology. Crucial here is the distinction between automatic and controlled processes. The rider represents rationality (a controlled process), which has evolved to serve the elephant, which represents everything else (automatic processing such as intuitions, instincts and visceral reactions.) The rider and elephant work best when they work together, and the rider can influence the elephant, but the rider is not in charge, and Haidt elaborates how and why the interaction between rider and elephant is often dysfunctional. Though the notion that the mind is divided is hardly novel, Haidt provides a thought provoking, scientifically updated and defensible interpretation of this point of view.

Haidt views the notion that “there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” as the root of much ancient wisdom. Haidt sees this Stoic and Eastern quest for serenity through acceptance as having beneficial aspects, but considers it as only part of the happiness equation. And to the extent that this quest is important, a particular criticism of the Western sages is that their valorization of reasoned insight as a freedom producing tool does not accord with our modern understanding of the mind. Though I’m sure Haidt would not dissuade a reader from tackling Marcus Aurelius or Boethius, he prefers cognitive behavioral therapy as a scientifically updated version of Boethius-like cognitive reframing activities that takes account of the powerful Elephant and its tendency-as seen through our evolved negativity bias-to be be pessimistic. As Haidt puts it “Cognitive therapy works because it teaches the rider how to train the elephant rather than how to defeat it directly in an argument.” Haidt is also a big fan of meditation, an ancient practice that tames and calms the elephant directly. Haidt also is a supporter of SSRI’s like Prozac, and thinks that since our affective style-which reflects the balance of power between our approach and withdrawal systems-turns out to be largely genetically determined (though meditation and cognitive therapy shows there is obviously some room for self-improvement), SSRI’s can benefit some losers of the “cortical lottery” who otherwise might have very limited prospects for relief from depression, anxiety and the like.

Haidt points out that group life is enabled to a great degree by reciprocal “tit for tat” strategizing, and says such behavior is absolutely critical for personal happiness. However, there are problematic complications. Seeming to be a good team player is more practically important than the reality, and persuading others of our good intentions works better when we are convinced of these intentions ourselves regardless of the facts. Haidt notes “we are well-armed for battle in a Machiavellian world of reputation manipulation, and one of our most important weapons is the delusion that we are non-combatants.” This applies both to persons as individuals and to persons to the extent they identify as members of groups. Haidt explores concepts like the inner lawyer, the rose-colored mirror, naive realism, and the myth of pure evil to argue that we have come equipped with evolved cognitive processes that predispose us to hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and moralistic conflict. Haidt also thinks evolutionary pressures have certainly contributed to often joyless “rat race” pursuits and their accompanying worries “the elephant cares about prestige, not happiness.”

Pursuing happiness necessitates becoming aware of and dissatisfied with the various self-promoting games we all tend to play-see his discussion regarding the progress and adaptation principles and the resulting weak relationship between environment and happiness-and striking out in a new direction. Haidt thinks that adversity is crucial for helping people to reassess and make meaningful alterations in their lives, and to develop greater coherence across what he takes to be the three levels of personality (basic traits, characteristic adaptations, and life story), all of which promotes human flourishing. He talks a lot about post traumatic growth-and he thinks that this insight if taken seriously has profound implications for how we structure our society and our lives. Haidt acknowledges, though, that one can experience too much adversity, and that it can strike at unhelpful stages in life. He thinks that adversity tends to be most profitable if experienced when one is in his/her 20’s. Though Haidt doesn’t mention it in his book, an obvious application here applies to college campuses. Haidt is a well known defender of free speech at the University level who laments the stultifying effects of PC orthodoxy on intellectual inquiry; if he is right about the 20’s being the best time to experience post-traumatic growth, than one could also criticize PC “snowflake culture” on the contemporary college campus as a factor inhibiting personal development because of excessive sheltering.

Haidt provides a Happiness equation, H=S+C+V, where S stands for the biological set point (the affective style, which can be altered to a degree), C stands for conditions (some of which are inalterable and others which can be changed), and V stands for voluntary activities. A stoic or an Eastern sage would define the happiness equation as merely H=S+V, with the voluntary activities in question being those that promote serene acceptance, thereby improving S. Haidt builds on this beginning, however, insisting that yes, there are conditions and other voluntary activities that matter. Meaningful relationships are important for Haidt, and by exploring attachment theory, he particularly argues for companionate love as a condition that definitely bolsters happiness. And utilizing the scholarship of Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, he points to activities that promote “flow” as part of the happiness equation as well. Summing up, if what one might call “the wisdom of the East” taught that happiness was to be found within, Haidt says that it is to be found within and without, though we need to be very discerning about where to look for it outside ourselves.

Haidt refines his outlook on happiness even further. We can find love in relationships and strive to find flow-ideally in our work-but Haidt goes further by speaking of “vital engagement,” a relationship to the world that is characterized both by experiences of flow and by meaning. Haidt’s vital engagement prioritizes journey over destination, an outlook that accords well with what he has to say about the effectance motive and the related progress principle. For Haidt, vital engagement is another way of saying that work has become love made visible. Haidt’s revised outlook on happiness is that it “comes from between;” since vital engagement exists in the relationship between the person and the environment, this right relationship is not entirely up to the individual.

Accordingly, Haidt emphasizes the importance of cross-level coherence between the physical, psychological, and sociocultural realms for creating a sense of meaning conducive to happiness. The liberal atheist Haidt-he has since started calling himself a political centrist- thus appreciates conservative, durkheimian insights into the importance of “community” for human flourishing, views the “character” approach to ethics as superior to the long dominant rationalist “quandry” approach, sees virtuous behavior as conducive to happiness, conceives of the perception of the “divine” as natural to man and as ennobling, regardless of whether or not God actually exists, and writes appreciatively of the work of David Sloan Wilson regarding religion as a evolutionary group adaptation designed to promote cross-level coherence. Haidt thinks the scientific community should accept religiosity as a normal and healthy aspect of human nature, and that maybe non-religious people can learn something from religious people, whether or not they believe in God.

Haidt’s book was a pleasure to read, and has spurred my interest regarding many authors and texts he weaves into his argument. In addition to opening new vistas and providing food for thought over a host of topics, evolutionary psychology in Haidt’s hands helps support time honored components of the “good life” such as family, vocational calling, faith, and community. And his own academic career strikes me as an example of the vital engagement he valorizes.

This book is definitely worth a read.

Mr. Darcy does not believe in fate, but a fake courtship with Miss Elizabeth Bennet may just change his mind.

He had escaped to London, then Pemberley, in an attempt to forget her stinging rejection of his proposal. But now, he must conspire with Elizabeth to fulfill his cousin Anne's dream of throwing her mother a surprise birthday ball - a surprise that Lady Catherine will surely hate. To make matters worse, Anne has already invited one of Lady Catherine's former suitors, a traitor more in love with wealth than the woman.

Elizabeth Bennet is at Rosings Park to assist her friend Anne in keeping the ball a secret from her mother, but is asked to pay a steep price when Anne requests that Mr. Darcy escort her about Hunsford under the guise that they are courting. Can she set aside her disdain long enough to pull it off, or will her dislike for Mr. Darcy ruin the whole thing? Can he convince her that he is a changed man, and persuade her to give him a second chance?

This is a sweet, clean and wholesome novella that is perfect for readers looking to spend just a few hours with our dear hero, Mr. Darcy.

  • I'm not certain why the author called this story " A Ball for Lady Catherine" at the end of the book as she is thanking the reader. That is one of the many puzzling things about this story.
None of the characters were recognizable in this variation other than by name.
The reason Darcy gave for assisting in the ball preparations was all for Elizabeth's benefit! It made him sound rather wimpy and Elizabeth far too impressed with him for what.....ordering servants around to do all the work?
Not a very good adaptation for ODC.
  • 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars

This is a light, fluffy story, and the writing flows nicely, but you do need to overlook some bits of illogic to fully enjoy it.

The first variation from canon is intriguing Darcy has proposed marriage to Elizabeth early on, in Hertfordshire. This was before Mr. Wickham has entered the scene and also before Mr. Bingley left Netherfield, so Elizabeth did not have those grievances against him. However, Darcy didn't mention how he ardently admired and loved her, instead giving the rationale that he needed a wife so his Aunt Catherine would stop pushing him to marry his cousin Anne. Elizabeth's refusal this time was purely based on his haughty manners, his disparagement of her family during his proposal, and the fact that she didn't love him, nor did she believe he loved her.

Another change is that Mr. Collins isn't as much of a boob as usual. He even has some impressive insight at times, and he's a devoted husband to Charlotte. Intriguing!

Aside from flashbacks, the book is set in Kent at Easter. (It's worth noting that by this time Bingley and Jane have already married, and Wickham's debts became known to everyone in Meryton earlier than usual, so he left the area in disgrace.) Anne de Bourgh is planning a surprise party for her mother's fiftieth birthday...a ball, no less! She enlists the aid of Elizabeth, the Collinses, Darcy, and Colonel Fitzwilliam to help her with the preparations and, most importantly, to keep Lady Catherine from discovering the surprise before the evening of the ball.

In a major stretch of credibility, Anne insists she can't possibly just send out invitations; Darcy and Elizabeth must hand-deliver them to adjoining estates. They must pretend to be courting, both to justify the time they'll spend in a curricle alone together and also as a proactive strike against Lady Catherine's insistence that Anne and Darcy marry. Oddly, Lady C. doesn't have a cow over this. She continues to include Elizabeth in her invitations to the Collinses, although she barely speaks to the impudent, grasping young woman.

Another part of the plan is to keep Lady Catherine out of the way as much as possible when the date of the ball draws near. Since Charlotte is expecting a young "olive branch," the Hunsford parsonage does need an extension built for the growing family, and Lady C. is lured there every day to oversee all the construction details. I couldn't help the feeling that, with the elaborate preparation for the big party going on at Rosings, I couldn't fathom that she wouldn't notice any of it without actually moving in with Mr. and Mrs. Collins.

It turns out that Anne has an ulterior motive--well, really, there's more than one--for throwing this ball for her mother. Primarily, she wants to reunite her mother with Lord Atwater, who Anne has reason to believe was in love with her. He had no wealth or title at that time, so Lady Catherine married Sir Lewis de Bourgh instead. However, there's a whiff of treason in his background. Darcy wonders whether this an honorable man and whether Lady Catherine would be pleased or furious to see him, if he even would agree to attend. I thoroughly enjoyed this element of the story.

The plot allows for plenty of interaction between Darcy and Elizabeth, which is always a plus. He's not convinced that Lady Catherine will appreciate either the surprise or the public proclamation of her age, but he goes along with Anne's plans in order to please Elizabeth. There's a lovely buildup of tension, both regarding the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth and also regarding Lady Catherine's reaction once she finds out what they've all been up to.

It's upbeat and fun, and the story is written well even if it doesn't always make sense.

I received an ARC of this book with no promise of a review, favorable or otherwise. Opinions are my own.
  • A sweet, romantic and chaste read.

I grinned from ear to ear when I read the description of the plot in this book and was full of anticipation of the entertainment ahead.

Elizabeth was visiting Hunsford and some of the previous events from canon had been altered.
Anne de Bourgh had an elaborate plan for her mother's birthday and she wanted the inhabitants of the parsonage to help her hold a surprise ball in the grand ladies honour. To accomplish that without the lady herself's knowledge, took clever manipulation.

Another surprise in this story was Mr Collins whom I actually liked, who would have thought...
Elizabeth however, came off as a tad too outspoken and rude towards Mr Darcy. He bore it admirably, even when she attacked his character repeatedly.
Darcy turned introspective and worked persistently to correct her impression of him and succeeded, but the resolution felt a little on the weak side.
  • In this unusual Pride and Prejudice variation, Darcy proposes not in Kent but at Netherfield while Jane is recovering from a much more lengthy illness then she has in canon. As is normally the case, Elizabeth is surprised by this, and of course, rejects him vehemently. But this is not the last she will see of Mr. Darcy. She visits Charlotte in Kent. After a few weeks there, she is drawn into a scheme to throw a ball for Lady Catherine's 50th birthday. As she, Mr. Collins, Charlotte, and Anne are discussing this, Mr. Darcy shows up. Soon, Darcy and Elizabeth are working together on a joint task for the ball, spending much time together to Darcy’s delight and Elizabeth’s initial dismay.

The proposal scene at Netherfield was shown in flashback as Elizabeth approaches Rosings. I thought that the author wrote dialogue that didn't feel realistic on a couple different levels. At times, it seems to be trying to mimic Regency patterns, but it didn't quite work out, feeling stilted. At times, too, the characters would speak for a bit before switching to the other character. If you are familiar with the original, you know that Jane Austen only occasionally had these kind of protracted soliloquies. Rather, she preferred a quick back and forth for conversation. I would have liked to have seen this scene written more in that less blocky, more rapid-fire way.

I also thought that Elizabeth quite often behaved inappropriately. She at times takes Darcy to task with the shrewishness that one would expect from her mother, not the witty and insightful Elizabeth we know and love, and she does so in front of others, which would not be acceptable by Regency propriety standards. Also, there are quite often long stretches of narrative; I would have liked to seen that more interspersed with dialogue for balance.

That being said, this was enjoyable variation on the typical story. I particularly enjoyed the idea of bringing in an important person from Lady Catherine's past. It was funny to watch Lady Catherine's reaction to all that Anne and crew put into place.

I did receive a free reader's copy, but that did not affect my review.

The Mission of a Lifetime Lessons from the Men Who Went to the Moon Basil Hero 9781538748510 Books Reviews

  • Growing up, as the author accurately describes, as the elementary school student watching the TV wheeled into our classroom, I joined America in holding its breath. My dad was an RCA engineer who saw it from the inside. I knew I was going to like this book, and I did. It is beautifully written.

I found myself absorbed in the insights, the personal snippets. While they are giants, heroes, they are human beings. They were not always heroic, often all too human. They have insights no one else has.

The author himself is sometimes all too human. He writes wonderfully. In the process of researching this book he obviously gained the trust and respect of his subjects. I couldn't help but wonder occasionally - was I reading the thoughts of these heroes, or of the author who dropped in a quote or to in support.

Be that as it may. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, one of dozens I've read about our space program. It is a wonderful story.
  • If you really want to understand and you should, I mean really understand what it means to go into space, to leave Earth orbit, to circle the Moon, to stand on lunar soil you have one best choice read " The Mission of a Lifetime." It was and it is not just the mission of a lifetime for the Apollo astronauts but for all Americans and all humankind. The only difference between the Apollo astronauts and the rest of us is they went there. It is still our story all of us.

What Basil Hero has done for all of us is bring us as close as humanly possible to the experience of the Apollo astronauts. Mr. Hero makes the reader one with them. No need to close your eyes and dream of going to the Moon. With your eyes wide open reading "The Mission of a Lifetime" closing your eyes to dream of going to the Moon is a waste of your time.

The only disappointment you will take away from this book and it is a good one the hunger for us to go back to the Moon and never leave it barren of human presence ever again. We should all thank Basil Hero for what he has accomplished with this remarkable ode to the legendary Apollo astronauts. Read it and you will forever look up at the Moon in the night sky with a sense of awe that will never leave you. Yes it is amazing what one book can accomplish !
  • At a time when we’re starved for heroes, “ Mission of a Lifetime” is about heroes from a time when anything seemed possible. Heroes for the ages, the Apollo astronauts. This is destined to be a book for the ages. If you want to re-live and re-learn the values that made this country great, read the aptly-named Basil Hero’s up close and personal account of the 12 remaining men that went to the moon.

The Apollo astronauts personified the true source of courage and conquering fear; the common good and believing in something greater than oneself. Hero gets the reticent astronauts to talk candidly of the stresses on their families; the importance of a clear mission; owning up to mistakes; teamwork and trust. JFK's summoning the national to put a man on the moon within a decade ranks as one of the greatest organizational feats ever. They were the few who saw the earth from the perspective of the moon and saw not 190 nations but victory for all humankind. This well written book will be read for generations. If you want to remember what made America great, read "The Mission of a Lifetime Lessons From The Men Who Went To The Moon".
  • Basil Hero has written a superb book on America's great adventure in space -- elegant, evocative, illuminating, and topical in a year we are observing the fiftieth anniversary of landing on the Moon. Understanding the importance of story-telling, Hero seeks out 12 astronauts who went to the Moon and asks them what they saw and what they learned about the Moon, about Earth, about themselves. We may commonly see them as astronauts, even technocrats, given their training and experience, but here they appear at times as philosophers and humanists. They offer us lessons from their past in selflessness, courage, leadership, humility, ambition and excellence, among others, that speak to us today. Most powerfully, they have no time for flag-draped politicians they call "false patriots and self-serving jackasses" and they make a stirring appeal to save our planet from the threat of pollution and global warming. Hero shimmers in casting the Earth as "a cosmic lighthouse", fifty times brighter than the Moon, which, by contrast, is dark, brooding and barren. Seeing both from space gave these mariners of the heavens a unique perspective. As one of them put it, "we went to explore the Moon, but discovered the Earth instead." This theme -- going into space and finding home -- is especially inspiring, one of the many discoveries awaiting us on Hero's wonderful celestial journey.

"A good book i deserve! Lovely! This is my go to book for my instant pot. In fact, I bought the instant pot at her recommendation in her columns in the New York Times. Some excellent recipes - the Vietnamese Chicken soup, the red lentil soup with mint oil which I skipped, bbq chicken was super easy, steel cut oatmeal. Some negatives- chicken curry had too many onions, the mac and cheese burned due to lack of liquid, the artichokes were bland. There are many recipes I look forward to trying - there are not too many books on instant pot out there so this is a must despite the quibbles. I like how she narrates the recipe, giving alternative options and also that there is a picture for each recipe. Well done! Amazing book!"

  • this is the cookbook to have. It will challenge you to stick to the whole food menu and try something new every day. You won’t get bored and you’ll always have fresh ideas to try or the favorite dishes to cook once more. You have to keep your body in balance and homemade food will help you to do just that. This cookbook came up as recommended and I could not resist the urge to tackle my curiosity and give my loved ones something to be surprised with...Thanks for the Author. Prescribed!
  • Such a great book it is!.I am very happy to read this book. The majority of the formulas are more beneficial variants of ordinarily browned sustenances aside from the sweet segment obviously., This is the best air fryer cookbook I have ever purchased. It has a lot of extraordinary formulas that are simple without a ton of colorful fixings. This book helped me to get a delightful feast utilizing 2-3 fixings just in 3 stages.I highly recommend to all try to read this well written book.
  • I felt that the book was useful enough that it was worth purchasing a copy for myself. The majority of the recipes show a picture. There are no nutritional values for most of the recipes. Most of the recipes are healthier versions of normally fried foods except for the dessert section of course. I've made a number of recipes and have been very pleased. At least that is my experience. Seriously!!!

  • Super Star of the three Air Fryer cookbooks I purchased recently. If you are new to Air Frying, this book is what you NEED. It has everyt hing
you need to get started with making great recipes. The book startss off with great tips and in depth information about the air fryer and its benefits. Next, you get five pages of charts for cooking most foods, frozen or fresh!. This becomes a handy reference tool. Thhe next section covers Air Fryer Safety, Oils to use, and Cleaning and Caring for your Air Fryer. Finally, there are nine chapters that include Breakfast, Lunch, Dinners, Appetizers, and Side Dishes!. There is also an Appendix for Conversion Tables. Easy-to-follow, well-written and delicious recipes. This book is worth every penny!....Helps newbie air fryers make good meals.
  • I choose the dish just by alphabetical index. I always have some ingredients in the fridge and want to cook something incredible. This book helped me to get a delicious meal using 2-3 ingredients just in 3 steps. AIR FRYER COOKBOOK #2019 is easy and fast! Handy book!
  • Yummy and Yummy. Air Fryer lovers. Very easy and convenient air fryer recipes are included in this book. Usually, when I get a new cookbook, I go through and put post-its on recipes I'm interested in making and it's only a handful. This book was different. I'm planning on making almost everything in it. plus, it's all convenient items that you probably have in your pantry or fridge anyway. I love my air fryer and use it almost every day. This book was a great addition to the cookbook that came with the air fryer. Plus, it was inexpensive. Plus, plus yummy!
  • I like the fact that calories, sugars, carbs etc are given for each recipe as many books leave this information out. This book is not written for a particular brand of air fryer but will work for any brand. When I think of frying, I think of fried chicken, French fries and onion rings. After looking through these recipes, I realize how limiting my thoughts were. There are so many different foods that can be prepared in the fryer. I have received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.
